Vulnerability and Shame

Two great topics tied to mental health. How do they fit into a church member's life as they try to live the gospel?

Shame keeps us from being honest with others, ourselves, and the Lord. It keeps us from progressing out of fear that we aren't good enough and never will be. Shame keeps us from really exploring the inner workings of our hearts because we are afraid of what we will find there- and afraid of the work required to change.

Vulnerability is hard. It's hard to admit to ourselves and others that we are far from perfect. It's hard to put ourselves out there knowing we will make mistakes and may be ridiculed even when we try our hardest.
In the church today I hear more and more local leaders complaining of members of their ward that are very critical of the hard work they do - even as they serve and love these members and their children! We need leaders that can be vulnerable, that can take criticism  - that can sort out the unimportant complaints and still put their hearts into their callings.

We need to let our guilt guide us to repentance, and let go of our shame. Even if we try to hide the truth from ourselves, it's plain and simple to Heavenly Father.
